One of my goals as a painter is to capture the interaction of light and atmosphere. In landscapes, I am particularly drawn to the rich, glowing, transient effects of early evening light. When I paint figures and portraits, I love to capture not only the effects of the light, but also the attitude of the body, its interaction with gravity, and the subtle, unique expression of the face.
Biography: Drawing has been an almost daily habit of mine for my entire life. I taught myself to paint as a senior in high school, and while earning my B.A. in biology, I first studied figure drawing. Two years after graduating I decided to pursue graphic design instead of biology. Throughout this career transition I continued to take figure drawing courses. Also during this period, I learned oil painting, taught myself plein air drawing, and found work creating commissioned portraits.
In 2003 I moved to Nashville, Tennessee and started working as a graphic designer, using both digital and traditional techniques. In 2006 I took evening courses in painting and figure drawing, both taught by the artist Paul Proctor. Inspired by his classroom discussions, I began to consider the goal of working as a studio artist rather than a commercial artist. In spring 2007 I studied portraiture under the painter Michael Shane Neal, finding further encouragement to pursue studio art as a profession.
In June 2008, I quit my fulltime graphic design job in order to find the time and energy to commit to an art career. I traveled to Colorado to develop my nascent plein air painting skills. The resulting landscape studies, all painted on location, are in my plein air gallery. I am about to begin the process of converting these images to larger, finished paintings. My current efforts are part of a larger goal of discovering my direction in painting and learning to find a market for that direction.
